A Grand Slam For All: Dr. Edgar “Doc” Morgan Kiwanis Grand Slam 4 Miler Run/Walk

Everyone needs encouragement and determination to reach goals.   Saturday, July 21, 2012, hundreds of athletes will compete in the ninth annual Dr. Edgar “Doc” Morgan Kiwanis Grand Slam 4 Miler.

The race is named after Dr. Ed Morgan, a physician and long-time member of the Kiwanis Club. Instead of retiring after more than 50 years as a well-known family physician in Louisville, Dr. Morgan took up running when he was 66 years old. He completed his first marathon – the New York Marathon - at 66 and competed in hundreds of area road races well into his eighties. He also finished the Boston Marathon. An accomplished senior athlete, Dr. Morgan also won a spot in the Kentucky Harness Horseman’s Hall of Fame.   Dr. Morgan co-founded the Louisville Kiwanis Grand Slam 4 Miler race in 2003 with Graham Honaker and was an active participant until his recent passing at 92 years old. Even as age and multiple falls battered him, Dr. Morgan continued to run, wearing a bicycle helmet and elbow and knee pads for protection. Proceeds from the race event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters and The Heuser Hearing Institute.
